about

"The Blackthorn Tree" came to me via the first volume of the Edward Bunting Manuscripts, a register of tunes made by Edward Bunting during the Belfast Harp Festival in 1792.
Eventually, after a little research, I came to realise that there is a substantial amount of different tunes with the same name and usually they appear in the form of song. I ended up elaborating my arrangement on Susan McKeown version of the song.
Either in Gaelic or English, the lyrics tend to refer to feelings of loss and longing of a central character, normally a woman, after she and her lover parted ways.
Over 150 versions of this tunes are in store at the Irish Traditional Music Archive.
